Challenge Grant Highlight: Cultivate Maize

The Maize Education Foundation loves supporting innovative programs that enrich student learning. In May 2024, we awarded a $6,474.20 Challenge Grant to the Maize USD 266 Food Service department to help sustain a successful existing initiative: hydroponic gardens in our schools. These gardens provide students with hands-on learning experiences while also enhancing the school lunch program with fresh, locally grown produce.

The Power of Hydroponic Gardens
Hydroponic gardening is a method in which plants grow in a nutrient-rich water solution instead of soil. This approach ensures that plants receive all the water, oxygen, and nutrients they need to thrive. In Maize USD 266, our hydroponic gardens are making a real difference:

  • Hydroponic gardens use 95% less water to grow sustainable meals.
  • 1,500 miles of travel are saved by growing food on-site instead of transporting it from distant farms.
  • Hydroponic gardens use zero pesticides, providing students with fresh, clean, and sustainable produce.

Board Members Join the Harvest
In March 2025, Maize Education Foundation board members had the opportunity to step into the shoes of student gardeners, visiting four Maize schools to help with the hydroponic harvest.

Throughout the day, board members:

  • Tested pH levels to ensure plants were growing in the best possible conditions.
  • Trimmed roots and harvested multiple varieties of lettuce and fresh herbs.
  • Delivered produce straight to the lunchrooms, where students could enjoy the fruits of their labor.

The experience was eye-opening and inspiring. It’s incredible to see how students engage with their food from seed to plate!

Investing in Innovation
Thanks to this Challenge Grant, Maize students are learning valuable skills, exploring new flavors, and actively contributing to a more sustainable future. These hydroponic gardens are more than just a way to grow food—they’re growing curiosity, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for where food comes from.
